Personality

Max begins the series as a seductive and cunning prostitute with a knack for manipulating people, who dreams of a better life for herself through her powerful lover Eleanor. However, when her aspirations and Eleanor’s conflict, Eleanor betrays her. Their relationship and Max’s well-being, take a dark turn for the worse. After, Bonny saves her from sexual enslavement to Vane’s crew, Max becomes far more assertive, first becoming the wily madam of the brothel, and later the owner of Eleanor’s tavern.

Max is very cool-headed, often playing both sides, in bed and in business, and landing on the winning side, such as convincing Vane to forgive Rackham, and converting the gold to pearls before the English invasion. She can be very loyal to her friends, protecting Bonny from the consequences of her actions, and running things in Nassau without creating enemies, unlike Eleanor.

Though Max becomes a power in her world after Eleanor’s arrest, she recognises the fragile nature of her business empire. When the prospect of legitimacy presents itself, Max sides with the new English Governor against the pirates, though she eventually learns that to remain in power, requires awful and lonely compromises when she’s forced to betray her lover Bonny.

Max’s alliance with Rogers only leads to the destruction of everything she’d built, when he leads a Spanish invasion fleet to the port. The death of Eleanor reveals something of a vengeful streak in Max, as she invites Marion Guthrie to financially ruin Rogers, avenging Eleanor. Max is usually led by her survival instincts, but in the end she rejects Marion Guthrie’s plans for her, having learned from her mistake in betraying those she truly cares for.

Trivia

  • Charles Vane was a historical pirate who terrorized the seas during the Golden Age of Piracy aboard his ship the Ranger
  • Charles Vane is left-handed, but he wears his sword on his left side like a right-handed person would.
  • The unique brand on his chest is the brand that Albinus gave to all of his child labourers.
  • Historically, Vane was not captured and hanged by the British until 1721, nearly five years after the show takes place.
  • Zach McGowan who portrayed Charles Vane has stated in an interview with Inverse that he wanted Charles to not apologize or beg when he died. He also said that he kept the sword that is now hanging above his fireplace at home. Read the interview here
  • It is unclear whether or not Vane is literate. In the Fathoms Deep podcast, Zach McGowan said he assumed Vane is not.

Trivia[]

  • Captain Edward «Ned» Low was a notorious English pirate during the latter days of the Golden Age of Piracy, in the early 18th century. Although he was active for only three years, Low remains notorious as one of the most vicious pirates of the age, with a reputation for violently torturing his victims before killing them.
  • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once described Low as a «savage and desparate» man of «amazing and grotesque brutality.»
  • During his short but successful career as a pirate captain, the historical Low and his crew took at least a hundred ships, most of which they subsequently burned.
  • The real life Edward Low didn’t become a pirate until 1721, six years after the events of the series.
  • Low’s flag is depicted slightly different from real life. In real life, his flag was a red skeleton on a black background. The show added the bleeding heart in its hand to make it look a bit more similar to the Walrus flag.

Memorable Quotes

«Well, Mr. Sanderson, I’m pleased to be in your company. Do you know why? Because you’re an earner. Did I tell you what happens when I stand next to an earner? My pussy gets wet. In which case, I will go fuck myself.«
―Eleanor to Sanderson, I.
«I think you misunderstand, I wasn’t asking you to help me, I was granting you the opportunity to help me.«
―Eleanor to John Silver, VI.
«You know when I first met you, I pegged you for an easy mark. But now, between you and Flint, I’m not certain who I should be more afraid of. I saw you earlier, after you lifted the ban. You were angry. Not just about Max. Those men out there, they made you admit you were wrong. They made you feel weak. I think you felt compelled to let everyone on this island know, that in this place, no one fucks with you and gets away with it.«
―John Silver to Eleanor Guthrie, VI.
«You will turn on absolutely anyone, won’t you?«
―Charles Vane to Eleanor, XV.
«I know Flint is dangerous, but he can be reasoned with. I know Rackham is devious, but all he cares about is his legacy. And because I have history with Charles Vane, I know him most of all. I’m all too aware what he is capable of destroying when he sets his mind on it.«
―Eleanor to Rogers, XX.
«Eleanor Guthrie used that chair not just to vanquish her enemies, but to create new ones. Because some people can only understand themselves through the eyes of those who hate them. They thrive only on sowing the seeds of their own eventual destruction. Miss Guthrie has new clothes now. Miss Guthrie has new friends now. But to my eye, she looks the same.«
―Mrs. Mapleton on Eleanor, XXVII.
«I have had enough of this…and I am ready for it to end.«
―Eleanor, XXXII.

―Rackham, XXVIII.

«Won’t take much to lose that new crew of yours. You may have them fooled now, but at sea, perhaps you’ll oversleep the bells and need a few hours. Perhaps you’ll be handed the glass and need help where to point it. Perhaps you’ll slip and fall, and that knee of yours will finally give out. Perhaps, perhaps, …perhaps. Of course no one will say anything, they respect you to much for that, but the moment the Urca looms close, and the first shot is fired, and you and me will know what every last man on that crew will really be thinking.«
―Rackham to Gates, III.

―Rackham tells Rogers a few home truths, XXV.
«If no Anne, if no rescue, if this is defeat for me, then know this. You and I were neck and neck in this race right till the end. But, Jesus, did I make up a lot of ground to catch you.«
―Rackham almost had the whole loaf, XXVI.
«If Charles knew we were even contemplating jeopardizing the grander effort to save him, he’d kill us all.«
―Rackham convinces Flint not to run to Vane’s rescue, XXVI.
«If the story of the pirate Jack Rackham is to end with him standing alongside Blackbeard as an equal, together defeating the governor, who hanged Charles Vane and in so doing, restoring pirate rule over Nassau…that is an ending I can live with.«
―Rackham, XXXI.
«I watched him defeat Edward Teach, in battle…outnumbered and through sheer force of will, saw his bloodlust with my own eyes. That man will never surrender his position here. He will never allow himself to be defeated by you, or I. Not because we bribed him, not because Eleanor Guthrie told him so. He simply will not allow it to happen. I don’t know where that man went or what designs drew him there. But this I know: Woodes Rogers will be returning. And this fight isn’t nearly over.«
―Rackham on Rogers, XXXIII.
«I betrayed you Jack…tried to trade your life for my own personal gain, lied to Anne to her face about it…please, Jack…I beg of you, is there any way you can forgive me? That’s was the general sense of what I thought I might hear, coming from your mouth, were I ever this close to you again.«
―Rackham to Max, XXXIV.
«Because what’s it all for if it goes unremembered? It’s the art that leaves the mark. But to leave it, it must transcend. It must speak for itself. It must be true.«
―Rackham, XXXVIII.

Personality

Edward «Blackbeard» Teach’s piratical career is so notorious that the mere mention of his name strikes terror in honest men and pirates alike. He is an extremely dangerous fighter and an excellent tactician. Though all pirates use pistols, most carry one or two, he carries a brace of four of them. He also only respects captains with strength, like Vane and Flint, with no respect for the wits and cunning of Rackham.

He feels like Vane is the son he’s never had, and bears him no ill will for his betrayal. He originally walked away from Nassau, because he would have been forced to kill him. Despite his seeming strength, he is dying from a piece of shrapnel in his chest, which is part of his reason for reconnecting with Vane. He doesn’t say a word when he learns of Vane’s death, but the look in his eyes shows his fury. He remains defiant to the end; even after being keelhauled three times, he spits blood in Woodes Rogers’ face.

Trivia

  • John Silver aka Long John Silver is a fictional creation of Robert Louis Stevenson. He is the morally ambiguous antihero in Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island.
  • Silver is revealed to speak fluent Spanish.
  • In the series, he is an awful cook, while in the book set twenty years later his nickname is Barbecue and is considered an excellent cook.
  • In the season two finale, Silver’s lower left leg is amputated after being brutalized by Vane’s quartermaster with a sledgehammer, giving him the one leg and a crutch famous from the book. Although, in the book he has lost his leg up to his hip and claims it happened while in the Royal Navy.
  • In the season three finale, Silver is given the name Long John Silver by Billy Bones, a reference to his threat to those who cross him that he has a long memory.
  • In the original book, Silver is mentioned to have a black wife: that mention inspired the character of Madi.

Personality

Vane is a fearless, violent, and passionate man with a vicious temper. He is a skilled and cunning fighter, with sword, fists or pistol; one of the best in the series. He’s also one of the best pirate captains in Nassau, rivalled only by Flint. He uses fear to lead others, and is fearless himself; he risked his own life to save Rackham, and in the end ordered Billy not to try and save him as he knew Billy would be killed. His career is so notorious that other captains sheepishly back down as soon as his name is mentioned.

While Vane tends to think with his fists first, he is highly intelligent, cunning, observant, and understands the ways of power better than most. He was one of the few people who saw why Ned Low was dangerous to Nassau and why Flint had to be saved. However, he has many flaws since he is selfish and sometimes his ego overpowers his logic. It is important to mention that ‘morals’ can sometimes be an unknown word to him since he allowed his whole crew keep as a sex slave Max, giving them the green light to rape her just because she owed them money.

Regarding the relationship of Vane and Eleanor, the creators of the show, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine explain it: «Vane and Eleanor, they are genuinely in love with each other. They know they don’t want the same things, yet there’s this emotional connexion that makes it impossible for them to get way from each other.» It is a relationship which mixes love and hate, passion and anger. It does, alas, end badly.

Vane was raised a slave, and still bears Albinus’s distinctive brand on his chest. He now despises slavers, and this fuels his desire for freedom for himself and on a grander scale for Nassau. He lives his life by his own set of rules that he refuses to break. He remains defiant to the end, using his final words to urge the crowd to seek freedom from English rule.

Trivia

  • Blackbeard’s famed flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, was an English frigate refitted by the French. It has not yet appeared in the show, but since it was not captured until late 1717, the series may be striving to reflect history in this respect.
  • Evidence suggests that Blackbeard was finally killed by Lt. Maynard, after he had been stabbed close to twenty times and shot five times. The series’ death scene for him instead reflected a myth spread about his demise: that his beheaded corpse swam three times around the ship after it was tossed overboard, mirrored by the three times his body was keelhauled.
  • Blackbeard got his name due to braiding his beard with lighted tapers so as to appear more fearsome to his victims.
  • In the show, he mentions having had nine wives, but the real Blackbeard may have as many as fifteen. So he still has six to go.
  • Israel Hands was famously the First Mate of Blackbeard, in real life.
  • In real life, Blackbeard started his career as Benjamin Hornigold’s second-in-command. In the show, this relationship is never mentioned, but Teach does mention that he sailed alongside Hornigold during the early days of the Pirate Republic.
  • Teach is shown with a number of different tattoos. These include the symbol from his flag: a horned devil skeleton stabbing a heart with a spear and holding an hourglass on his right bicep, an hourglass on his right shoulder, and two triangular symbols on his abdomen that were inspired by traditional Tahitian tattoos.

Biography[]

Season Three

During his months crewing with Captain Flint, Dobbs becomes a member of the vanguard. During a raid, however, amidst the war against civilisation, he loses his footing, which Flint interprets as him losing his nerve. Once they return to the Walrus and Flint demands he gets replaced. Billy Bones tells Flint that he just lost his footing and doesn’t think it had anything to do with his nerve, but Flint orders he be replaced. John Silver reluctantly convinces Dobbs to quit his position as the vanguard, telling him that his skill in the rig is too valuable. He later informs Flint of this.

Flint sails the crew through a storm in order to escape Benjamin Hornigold, who has become a pirate hunter for the Royal Navy, refusing to surrender in exchange for pardons. Dobbs is part of the deck crew and mans one of the ropes. However, they are unable to raise their t’gallants and the wind nearly capsizes the ship, and the men on deck are thrown around by the waves. Flint is eventually forced to cut away the t’gallants of the main and foremast, righting the ship. Billy then advocates that they weigh anchor and ride out the storm below, but Flint says that Hornigold will be looking for them when it dies out. Billy orders Dobbs and Palmer to man the starboard braces while Flint ties himself to the helm and tries to steer them through the storm. The crew survives, but they are becalmed in the Sargasso Sea with little food or water.

The crew spends over three weeks in the Doldrums surviving on minimal rations and what little they can catch with the eel nets. During this time, two crewmen accuse each other of stealing rations. Silver tries to deliberate, but gets nowhere and Flint executes the two. As supplies dwindle even further, Silver and Flint row out to a whale carcass to try and salvage its meat but it is too far rotten for consumption. However, they catch several sharks to feed the crew. Shortly thereafter, the wind returns, and they sail to an uncharted island.

The crew is captured upon arrival at the Maroon Island. The Maroons lead them to their camp upriver, where they are imprisoned. Several of the crew are chosen to be tortured and interrogated before being killed. The crew spends several days imprisoned in cages preparing to be worked to death. However, Flint is able to negotiate a partnership with the Maroon Queen and her husband Mr. Scott where they will join forces to retake Nassau and then launch a rebellion of pirates and slaves to end colonial rule in the New World.

The crew takes on a number of Maroons and sails to Ocracoke Island to try and reclaim the Pirate Fleet. While they sail to Ocracoke , the crew works on repairing the fore and main masts, which were damaged in the storm. As they try and haul a spar up to the tops of the masts, the lashing becomes undone and the spar comes crashing down to the deck. Dobbs becomes angry after barely dodging the falling wood, and rushes towards the Maroon, calling him an idiot and saying that if he can’t tie a rope he shouldn’t be on a ship. Flint, Billy Bones and Kofi then step in to prevent things from escalating.

Flint asks what happened and Dobbs explains that the Maroon’s lashing came undone, which he had showed him how to do it ten minutes ago. Dobbs also adds that someone could have been killed. Flint replies that Dobbs showed the Maroon incorrectly. Dobbs is irritated by this, and says he knows how to tie a lashing. Flint repeats that if the Maroon tied it wrong, then Dobbs instructed him incorrectly. Flint then pulls him close and emphasizes how they persuaded the Maroons that they need the pirates, but the pirates certainly need the Maroons. With that, everyone continues their work.

Later, Dobbs takes revenge on one of the ex-slaves, by mutilating him. Quartermaster John Silver eventually brought the Maroon Queen’s daughter, Madi, into the fold. Madi swallowed her pride to maintain the alliance, and released her man with orders to say nothing. On Silver’s part, he had his men pin Dobbs in his bunk with a blanket and beaten.

However, to redeem himself, Silver gave Dobbs a key role in the battle when overwhelming English force attack the island. After clearing the beach, Dobbs seemed to betray the pirates. He leads the English into an ambush, where Flint’s concealed men began slaughtering them. In the ensuing chaos, Benjamin Hornigold killed Dobbs.

Memorable Quotes[]

«Let me see if I have this right. This is the fourth prize in a row from which the profits will barely exceed the expenses it took to win it. Singleton’s out there trying to convince your crew to torture that poor bastard of a captain simply ’cause he hasn’t worked out how to get them to do it to you. But all’s well because you’ve discovered that the information we can’t tell anybody we’re looking for exists on a page…that we don’t have.«
―Gates to Flint
«My fault. That was my fault. When I said we would need to keep our tempers in check, I failed to clarify that we would need to do so for the duration of the meeting. Entirely my fault.«
―Gates to Flint

Memorable Quotes

«For years, I’ve laid my head down at night, and no matter where I was, there was an odor would arrive at my nose… Brine and hides and pitch and shit. The perfume of this place.»

— Teach to Vane in XX.

«Strife is good. Strife makes a man strong. For if a man is capable of confronting death daily, functioning in the face of it, there’s no telling what else that man can do, and a man whose limits cannot be known is a very hard man to defeat in battle.»

—  Teach to Vane and Rackham in XX.

«A little Spanish shrapnel. It went in here when I was not much older than him. Once in a while it migrates, ticks closer to reaching its terminus and striking its chime. Grim little timepiece whose ticking has grown louder to my ears of late.»

— Teach to Netta in XXIV.

«So we have one fleet and two men claiming it. There is only one way I know of to resolve that. Pistols, then swords.»

— Teach to Flint in XXIV.

«Charles is dead. The governor in Nassau hung him in the square. On the island I helped build, he thought he could do that and face no consequences. He failed to account for me.»

— Teach to Rackham in XXVIII.

«And just after he joined my crew… I spent two weeks careening on this shit island with no name. I knew right away he was different than the others. He was so like me when I was a younger man. And that he and I somehow were fated to matter to one another. I was consumed with the question of whether our similarities would be a blessing or a curse. So, whilst the others were careening, a number of us were inland by a spring. The sun climbs up over the top of the trees… in just a way that it shines off the pool… lighting up all around us. In that moment, a bird lands on the water… massive, snow-white beast, big as a boar. To this day, I’ve never seen anything like it. Between the sun and the size of it, it just felt… meaningful. The answer to a question I did not yet know how to ask. I told him that there were men in the east who would have seen in that bird the darkest of all omens, bringer of death. But then, there are other men near Clifton… my… my mother’s home… who would’ve called it a sign of great fortune, an indication from the heavens that someone up there favored our endeavor together. And I asked him what he thought it meant. ‘Dinner.'»

— Teach to Rackham in XXX.

Personality[]

Rackham begins the series as the Quartermaster of the Ranger, and the brains behind captain Charles Vane’s brawn. He is stylish, witty, well-read, and very proud of his wits, which he takes every opportunity to flaunt. However, Rackham is initially not a very good pirate. He’s not a skilled fighter and his attempts at strategy usually land him in dire situations, his lover Bonny must bail him out of. His foppish appearance and effete mannerisms tend to lead others to underestimate him, and he can’t seem to gain respect. He’s ever fixated on his legacy and a bit obsessed with the adventure he’s invented.

However over the series, he has proved time and again that he is very capable at what he does, culminating in his victory against an overwhelming English fleet at the Maroon Island. It may have even won Rackham some respect from Teach. His captured by Woodes Rogers begins a personal rivalry, in which Rackham asserts that Rogers isn’t as morally superior as he seems to think. This is further heightened by Charles Vane’s death. In the end Rackham wins out with some help, and deals out a cruel ending to Rogers; instead of killing him, he gets Eleanor’s grandmother to buy Rogers’ debts and force a default, with all of his failures becoming a matter of public record.
